Studio Report: Devoid of Life (2016 Reissue)
Written on 6 Apr 2025

This being a re-mixing of the original album, much of the progress is of course the same as all the guitars, bass and vocals are the exact same ones that were on the original 2012 edition. This release happened sort of by accident as I was trying out some different mixing methods and sounds, and I used Neurovirus from the original 2012 recordings as the base during those test mixes. And one of the mixes turned out so good, I tried it out for another Devoid of Life song. The sound was so good that I simply decided to apply it to the rest of the songs on the album and was more than good enough to release for the fans! The unfortunate thing was that most of Ville's original drum tracks were missing and Teemu who originally recorded them could not find more than a little bit of the recordings. So for this release, we had to go with a mixture of the original programmed drums that the demos in 2010 used and modifications to them were added to match what Ville played on the 2012 release, but using the programmed drums. And as was done on ...of What Remains, the final drums were also human-played on the Alesis PercPad to make them sound more realistic. But other than the drums, all other performances are the original ones, so the release was very quick to finalize. Another goal was to also bring the various synths and orchestral sounds more pronounced up in the mix, and this mix is a little bit more on the ambience than the original more band-oriented one, so there is also a nice amount of variety and you can choose which version to listen to. Another interesting tidbit is that the reissue album artwork is actually the original Devoid of Life design, from before we picked the dark style design for the 2012 release. == Equipment Guitars - Schecter Blackjack 007 - RME Fireface 400 Bass - Ibanez BTB 555 - RME Fireface 400 Drums - Alesis PercPad - Addictive Drums 2.0 The vocals were done by Teemu at his studio in Kemi, but the details remain a mystery...
